Campus Chill

Description

CAMPUS CHILL
AUG 2017 – FEB 2019

Fall of 2017 I joined two other engineers in co-founding a search engine company. Campus Chill is a mobile app allowing college students to find others with not only similar interests but similar levels of passion, no data entry or 3rd party required.

‘COMPARE’ FEATURE

LAUNCHED Q4 2018
NEED:

What are new features we can develop with data derived from our core feature, sorting? How can we improve not only short-term engagement but stand out in the marketplace?

DESIGN PROCESS:

Through the Team Chill account, I messaged hundreds of users as if I was another member. Users were itching for a new feature, so we decided to expand on user discovery.

ALGORITHM DESIGN:

This new view controller took the sort data from each user and compared a matching value from each user. The matching algorithm took into account the position of each matched activity and calculated a difference in score.

APP STORE OPTIMIZATION

PROJECT PERIOD OCTOBER 2018
STRATEGY:

At the time, our growth strategy was passing flyers our by hand across college campuses. We decided to choose App Store Optimization as our growth channel due to how our authentication and registration flow were designed. If we can reach college students browsing the App Store, our authentication system will filter out poor users and leave us with a healthy, active user base.

PROCESS:

When approaching ASO, we broke down each step of the App Store discovery flow into conversion points. Each point was assigned a conversion ratio which we tracked with each new version we shipped. Within each version was an iteration of the app title/subtitle, description, screenshots, logo, etc.

We also looked at competitors’ keywords and iterated each version based on our findings.

RESULTS:

Once our system was in place, we quickly were able to capture a baseline in our weekly growth rate and begin shipping changes. This resulted in a 30% page view-to-Registered User conversion rate and ranking in the top 5 for keywords like “Snapchat”, “Tinder University”, and “Tinder U”.

CHILL USER MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

LAUNCHED Q4 2018
PROBLEM:

User management became a crucial function of supporting user growth and engagement within Chill. Previous to the Chill Dashboard user management was done through governor permissions given to co-founders within the Chill app.

DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT:

Chill Dash is a Flask-based web app built to give support team members CRUD update permissions to the Chill user base. The dashboard allowed for rapid responses from the Chill team to user support questions and in monitoring Chill for the community’s safety.

‘FRIENDS DISCOVERY’ FEATURE

LAUNCHED Q1 2018

DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT:

Chill’s user discovery was split into two portions: friends and dates. The Friends Discovery was designed to focus the user’s attention on the users’ shared levels of passion. To do so, we made three key changes:

– Shrunken profile pictures to shift the user’s focus on physical attraction.

– Hidden social media drawer to push users to others’ profiles without hindering the experience of those who just want to quickly add.

– Splitting users by campus, state, all to give to the illusion of a vibrant social network.

ROLL-OUT:

Once the feature’s first production version was live, we traced metrics such as; taps on ‘ADD’ of users who have opened friends discovery, open drawers initiated by users who have opened friends discovery, and conversions along with campus view, state view, and all view.

‘CHILL VISION’ –  COMPUTER VISION PROFILE AUTHENTICATION

LAUNCHED Q1 2019

PROBLEM:

As user safety became a priority, we needed to validate profile pictures of users to maintain the integrity of the user base as a whole.

IMPLEMENTATION:

We trained a machine learning model on thousands of valid profile pictures. Once the model proved reliable, we routed new user-generated profile pictures to Chill Vision. If a profile picture did not contain a “normal” human face, a support team member was notified and proper changes were made using Chill Dash.

COLLEGE EDU EMAIL VERIFICATION

LAUNCHED Q4 2018

STRATEGY:

When designing our onboard flow, we decided to add additional steps for college authentication in the name of long-term user base integrity. We decided the loss in user growth (due to the additional steps) was worth the validation of users being current college students.

IMPLEMENTATION:

To do so, we built a massive database of EDU email extensions, college web domains, and names. Once the data was wrangled, the EDU system was put in place. The database of EDU’s made Chill one of the only applications on the market with a self-built EDU AUTH system.

FUNDRAISING PITCH DECK DESIGN

Q2 2018 – Q4 2018
OVERVIEW:

Over the course of Q2 2018, I designed Campus Chill a pitch deck from scratch.

DESIGN PROCESS:

When approaching fundraising, I decided to design our deck on an iterative schedule with each feedback I received from investors. When a metric was vague, I queried new performance indicators. The deck also covered market research, budget breakdowns, emotional tactics, and more.
